MEDIA STATEMENT
 13 SEPTEMBER 2000

PREMIER ACCEPTS DEFECTION TO THE ANC BY DR. MANIE SCHOEMAN

The question of Dr. Schoemans defection to the ANC is warmly applauded by the ANC. This is so because we know that the decision was not
reached easily. It is not one of the defections of people who want to secure seats or positions within government. It was a product of a
serious introspection as well as criticising of both the New National Party (NNP) and the Democratic Alliance (DA). As such, it is a
principled decision by a leader of greater integrity. So we are happy to receive him and we are confident that he will bring quality to the
ANC.

His criticism of both the NNP and the DA is reflective of his matured political understanding. Dr Schoeman knows that the ANC is the only
remaining national party in this country. As such, true nationalists who want to make a genuine contribution to national building must, of
necessity, join the ANC. There is no clear ideological basis for the DA. It is neither a nationalist nor a liberal party. It is an
alliance of convenience with only one stated objective: to reduce the power of the ANC. Surely this is the epitomy of recreation rather
than a choice of an ideological direction.

Dr. Schoeman characterizes the DA as a pale alliance. He is right. The sprinkling of blacks for public relations purposes does not
change that fact. But above all, the DA is a classical example of elitist, professional and unprincipled politics. Only a few haves will
benefit from it. Forget the newly-found rhetoric about the plight of blacks in this country.

We welcome Dr. Schoeman and the many others who left the NNP in a number of Karoo Dopries in the last few weeks.
